Chain requests

Situation

The situation

The result of one step becomes the material for the next.

You handle quotes at a caterer in Lille. For each request, the AI first summarises the customer’s message, then suggests a menu based on that summary.

Idea 1 of 3

A chain of requests

Chaining means passing the result of one step to the next one. Step 1: summarise the customer’s request. Step 2: suggest a menu from that summary.

Idea 2 of 3

A placeholder to fill

In the same conversation, the next request can say “from this summary”. To reuse it for every customer, write it with a placeholder in curly brackets, such as {summary}, replaced each time by the result of step 1. Tools such as n8n or Make do it automatically.

Idea 3 of 3

Check between steps

A mistake in step 1 carries into step 2. Read the summary before passing it on: a forgotten allergy must not make it into the menu.

Example

Before and after

Avoid

Make a menu for this customer.

Better

Here is the summary of the customer’s request: {summary}. Suggest a 3-course menu that respects the budget, the number of guests and the allergies given. Add nothing that is not in the summary.

Why? The same request works for every customer: just replace {summary}. The constraints are restated, nothing is made up.

Question 1 of 2

What is the {summary} placeholder for?

What is the {summary} placeholder for?
See the answer

To mark where you paste the result of step 1 The placeholder holds the place of the previous result. The same request works for every customer.

Question 2 of 2

The step 1 summary leaves out an allergy. What is likely to happen?

The step 1 summary leaves out an allergy. What is likely to happen?
See the answer

The step 2 menu will miss it too Step 2 only sees the summary. Hence the review between steps.

Exercise

Your turn

The first request had a customer’s message summarised. Write step 2: a menu based on this summary, inventing nothing.

First request

Summarise this customer message in 4 lines: date, number of guests, budget, allergies. “Hello, we are celebrating my mother’s 60th birthday on 14 June, at home, with 25 guests. We would like a cold buffet, for about €30 per person. Two children are allergic to nuts. Thank you!”

It was already sent to the AI. Write the next message in the conversation.

Ctrl + Enter to check your request.

Checklist

  • Build on the step 1 summary, to do
  • Say what step 2 produces: a menu, to do
  • Restate the constraints: budget, guests, allergies, to do
  • Ask it to stick to the summary, inventing nothing, to do

Key point

Chain the steps: the result of one feeds the next. Read it before passing it on.
